I for one welcome our Social Media overlords. Seriously though, Google, Twitter and Facebook serving the role of Thought Police, enforcing Right-think while suppressing Wrong-think is a deeply chilling reality.
How these unacountable entities became the arbiters of truth escapes me but the fact that they now decide what is or is not valid speech is chilling to any free speech advocate.
In this case they decided which stories were valid and which points of view to suppress, in an opaque and completely unaccountable way. When they were proven wrong their response was “East Asia has always been at war with Eaurasia” while attempting to memory-hole the truth.
All three of these networks are large enough to be considered utilities. As such their users should enjoy a fundamental right to freedom of speech and to due process if their rights are violated.
The major networks should still be able to have and enforce their own terms and conditions but free speech needs to be enforced as a basic right for users.
Otherwise Twitter, Google and Facebook will become the new Thought Police.
