Middle East? don't think many people consider it the middle east.
- yardstick 5y agoTurkey is predominately in the Middle East, despite a small section in the European continent. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East
- pafje 5y agoWhile only a small part of Turkey is in Europe, that part is very important (Istanbul). Turkey is also still officially applying for EU membership although neither side wants it these days and the process is all but dead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accession_of_Turkey_to_the_European_Union https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accession_of_Turkey_to_the_Eur...
- Clewza313 5y agoOnly half of Istanbul is in Europe, and while the historical core is on the European side, most of the modern city center (Taksim etc) is on the Asian side.
- HeavenFox 5y agoI thought so too; isn’t it part of Near East? However Wikipedia suggests people have began to use the term Middle East to cover that part of the world too apparently
- distances 5y agoFor what it's worth, for me they are synonyms.
- flohofwoe 5y agoIt depends on the language. For instance, what the US and UK calls the "Middle East", Germany calls the "Near East". https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittlerer_Osten https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittlerer_Osten https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naher_Osten https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naher_Osten
- thaumasiotes 5y agoWe also call it the "Near East"; that term is just less common than "Middle East". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_East https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_East
