Wtf is this?: By reading this website, you agree, on behalf of your employer, to release me from all obligations and waivers arising from any and all NON-NEGOTIATED agreements, licenses, terms-of-service, shrinkwrap, clickwrap, browsewrap, confidentiality, non-disclosure, non-compete and acceptable use policies ("BOGUS AGREEMENTS") that I have entered into with your employer, its partners, licensors, agents and assigns, in perpetuity, without prejudice to my ongoing rights and privileges. You further represent that you have the authority to release me from any BOGUS AGREEMENTS on behalf of your employer.
If it's supposed to be funny, I really don't have time for it so I left without reading
- wizzwizz4 5y agoIt's supposed to be satire. Not all satire is funny. (It also, potentially, shields the author from lawsuits.)
- edoceo 5y agoMight even be good satire (which I think means: 50/50 funny, 80% offensive) and it got someone to leave - so...Well played?
- michaelmrose 5y agoI cannot imagine a judge concluding you are free from your obligations while retaining whatever consideration you received from Bob corp because Jim who works in the mail room read your blog.
- wizzwizz4 5y agoAlmost all the examples are agreements without consideration (e.g. “I get to sell your data”, a common “browsewrap “agreement””). Cory Doctorow's agreement is as valid as they.
- michaelmrose 5y agoAt least if someone enters into an agreement to share their data they actually have the right to share said data unlike privileges reserved for Bob corps officers not Sam the secretary. This is the most obvious problem but there is also the implied covenant of good faith that is clearly violated by trying to trick Sam the secretary into giving up agreements entered into by Sam's boss and a third party. I think you vastly overestimate the validity of such an agreement.
- wizzwizz4 5y agoThe point is, none of the agreements are actually agreements. It's a fiction.
- okareaman 5y agoIf I were a writer I wouldn't put up an extra hurdle for my readers to jump over, but that's just me
- okareaman 5y agoI didn't realize it was Cory Doctorow. I've enjoyed his stuff in the past. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_and_Out_in_the_Magic_Kingdom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_and_Out_in_the_Magic_King... I'm still not reading his blog though because I'm not a lawyer and I find that disclaimer profoundly uninteresting
