If I were you, asking for this test would be the first thing I would say at the doctor's, explaining why I want it would be the second. Obviously most people wouldn't know they need it but IMHO this has to change. Everyone should be taught basic physiology and diagnostics at school. Every device comes with a basic manual - so every body should. I actually wonder why isn't this already the case in the USA where many people can't afford a doctor. Living some years without insurance taught me I really need to have some basic medical knowledge myself and it actually is easily available nowadays.
