So...
$ /usr/bin/python
WARNING: Python 2.7 is not recommended.
This version is included in macOS for compatibility with legacy software.
Future versions of macOS will not include Python 2.7.
Instead, it is recommended that you transition to using 'python3' from within Terminal.
Python 2.7.16 (default, Dec 21 2020, 23:00:36)
[GCC Apple LLVM 12.0.0 (clang-1200.0.30.4) [+internal-os, ptrauth-isa=sign+stri on darwin
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> exit()
but wait, also,
$ /usr/bin/python3
Python 3.8.2 (default, Apr 8 2021, 23:19:18)
[Clang 12.0.5 (clang-1205.0.22.9)] on darwin
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> exit()
I think we should take the lines,
> This version is included in macOS for compatibility with legacy software.
> Future versions of macOS will not include Python 2.7.
> Instead, it is recommended that you transition to using 'python3' from within Terminal.
For exactly what it says. It's included for compatibility with legacy software and should be transitioned from it to another version... the other version that's bundled with it.
- Wowfunhappy 5y agoNowadays, it's included for compatibility with legacy software. Initially, it was included for current software. How do you stop the latter from becoming the former? When do you make the switch? And remember, `/usr/bin/python3` wouldn't exist on your system (as more than a stub) if you hadn't installed the developer tools.
