In the long term, I think California is in deep trouble. When the population of California began to grow rapidly at the end of the 19th century, the climate history of California was very poorly understood. Unbeknownst to Californians at that time, California was actually in the middle of an unusually wet spell; for most of the previous thousand years, Californian weather was much drier than California was in the 19th and 20th centuries when the population exploded.
