The more code/less code debate can be seen in language learning. Initially, you're happy you can use a large amount of language well. Later, you're happy if you can articulate yourself in as few words as possible. I would prefer a developer who can work with a large amount of code. I would prefer, even more, a developer who can write the same thing with less code. Generally speaking, a developer doesn't gain the ability to the do the latter without first doing the former. And there's an annoying phase in the middle where "less code" is condensed code.
