You are right in the way that I was not aware that the hardware might have been designed for windows. Most devices are probably "designed for windows" (much more likely given its dominance compared to me just being lucky when picking parts for my computers for 15-20 years) so I would have to go out of my way to get linux specific hardware for no clear gain.
In the moment of the original problem, adding a second monitor to an already running setup via DP chaining. Getting new hardware was the much less viable option compared to switching to an OS where I already own a license and which has drivers available that correclty implement the protocol.
Lastly, the originally mentioned switch to windows was motivated by a hardware problem, but it was by no means my only annoyance with linux. For me windows is closer to the way I want my OS to behave, but it is by no means perfect.
If I'll ever find myself in the situation that I want a linux computer specifically, I will keep your advice in mind to make sure to find compatible hardware! It is good to know that linux is much less flexible due to presisting bad driver support, even though it improved a lot since I first used a linux distribution.
