If you are paying out of pocket you are likely being billed more than what an insurance company is paying with their negotiated rate. A large number of hospitals are for profit and in many parts of the US a for profit hospital may be your only reasonably close choice. My experience has been that there is very little difference between how for profit and non-profit hospitals work as far as negotiation of billing.
