A lot of this is just a reversion to the mean. For most of history the opportunity to advance your station was basically nonexistent. We're starting to see that pattern return where a variety of institutions(including naked oppression and conquest) created briefly a place where some categories of people could get a head in a dynamic society. All of this has happened before and all of it will happen again.
