Chromium developers tend to exhibit a certain arrogance about knowing best for other people's workflows - this is certainly not the first time there's been a regrettable UI change without a configuration option provided, though it might push me over to Firefox or Brave, too. Though as pointed out on that bug comments, once something's labelled anything less than a P1 it's basically archived in the eyes of the dev team.
