I have a colleague who attended a wedding in India post vaccination and he and many other guests contracted the Delta variant, none went to the hospital including his parents.
To be honest, I was surprised so many still contracted the variant.
For anecdata, they were ill with mild flu-like symptoms for a two or three days, their older parents were ill with similar symptoms for about a week.
The reason this is all concerning to me is that it means we're going to keep seeing the spread of variants as long as vaccination efforts are not complete and effective.
- verdverm 5y agoIf they were vaccinated and still became symptomatic, doesn't the symptomatic part imply that they could still spread the delta variant? What I read from this anecdata (liking that term btw), is that the delta variety can spread despite the vaccine, although probably with a lower R?
- codezero 5y agoYes, I take it as a given that they could transmit the virus, and the vaccine only protected them from experiencing worse symptoms, but I do not know the research on the transmissibility based on vaccination, so don't take my opinion into account. The rough number I was given was 30/40 guests were infected, I do not know the vaccine status of everyone but they were mostly affluent and should have had access to the vaccine, so again, anecdata but does seem like transmission is still a factor when vaccinated, but we'll probably get more data on that as vaccines continue to roll out.
