I’d focus on their past experience. Maybe ask about a challenging project and the decisions they made. (Then follow up and ask a reference about the project. Make sure both descriptions match up. Let the interviewee know you’ll be doing this obviously) Look at any github code. Or give them a short homework assignment. (Less than one hour) and then talk over their decisions. Bonus points if you give them problems they’ll actually work on at the job.
