When I was three years old and limited in experience, I was astounded by the massive and powerful beast that was the city garbage truck. I was captivated by it's ability to lift heavy trash cans, dump huge dumpsters, and compact trash bags. It's diesel engine roared like a lion, the king of the jungle, as it barreled down the street. It was also driven by strong men, who could lift full trash cans and throw them empty across our driveway. It was at that point I knew I had to become a garbage man - what more to life could there be?
About the same time, I saw on TV the grey-haired white man talking on a podium. Everyone was quiet and listening to him speak boldly. He certainly sounded like he knew what he was talking about, and people would clap for him! In fact, I discovered there was a long-time tradition of grey-haired white men speaking at podiums for all kinds of events that are supposed to be important. Wow! I did not understand what they were talking about, but I knew that I needed to grow up to become a bold-speaking grey-haired white man if I were to be taken seriously. Bonus points if flags are involved with cool looking good eagles on top of them.
All these dreams faded. I never dreamed of becoming anything besides the stereotypical hero, until teenage years brought exciting new experiences. The high school had a program with the local hospital to train students for a nursing internship. I dreamt I might become a nurse, then join the military and become a medic. A year or two later, I would take a step back and dream about becoming a philosopher. I eventually learned what IT certifications were, and dreamed about achieving them. This, I actually did. I also had a mentor for a time, and he pushed me to pursue a career of my dreams. I even got pretty close to making it reality...
Still dreaming.
