Self-Driving Semi Completes 950-Mile Delivery 10 Hours Faster Than a Human
- jazzyjackson 5y agoA freight train can keep itself between two lines even faster, if the concern is delivery time, why not speed up the freight trains and automate the intermodal handoff. In the old days if freight needed to get somewhere faster they would put some passenger coaches on the train and call it an “express” - maybe USA can finally have high speed rail if we can convince the freight companies to get on board, maybe we can call it the FedExEx
- hourislate 5y agoRail makes sense if your shipping across the country. Actually I would be surprised if anyone used trucking to ship from the East Coast to the West Coast since every shipping/trucking company I know already uses rail extensively to ship out of Region. When it's state to state or within a region, rail doesn't make sense since it won't save time or money.
- Traster 5y agoNo it didn’t. First - a driver was required in the vehicle meaning they either had to break laws around driving shifts or use 2 drivers - which you can already do. Second - the driver had to drive both the start and end of the journey. This is like when your child learns to ride a bike and you’re actually just running along behind keeping them up- the difference being with the kid if you let go and they crash it’s not a big deal. There’s nothing about this technology that enables what they’re claiming, it’s basically a demo other companies could have done 5+ years ago.
