If you expect “high-skilled” workers to work for the minimum wage for that industry, or not much more, then it’s not a worker shortage, it’s a wage shortage.
There was ferocious and copious competition for each and every well-paying job I have ever applied to.
Conversely, any low-paying opening for a high-tech position has ALWAYS had a difficulty in filling and keeping that position filled.
Anything will “sell” if it’s at the right “price”. If it’s not selling, that’d because it’s not at the right price.
Business owners: if you have ANY sort of a position that needs filling, but you cannot find anyone to fill it, LOOK IN THE MIRROR TO FIND THE TRUE ROOT PROBLEM. Because that sounds very much like a “you” problem.
TL;DR: the “free market” applies in all directions, including business owners looking to find employees. If no-one is applying, what you are offering is below what the free market will support, because the free market doesn’t give a single shit as to what YOU think the job is worth. And no amount of whining about “lazy, entitled employees” will change the fact that if you pay only peanuts, all that you will get will be monkeys.
