How to help students heal from math trauma
- cratermoon 5y agoI had a bit of math anxiety from high school. When I went to college my first choice of major required calculus, which was taught over two semesters. I made a D in the first semester and changed my major to one that didn't require calculus. But by my senior year I had spent enough time around engineering students and others and had gained a lot of confidence in my ability. For no other reason than sheer stubbornness, I retook that calculus class and made an A. I very nearly scored a 100% on the final exam. I haven't been anxious about math since, but I've never devoted the time to become proficient at anything that doesn't directly apply to my software development career. I do love some math and when I took a self-taught course in ML it dredged up some forgotten bits of vectors and matrices from high school pre-calculus.
