I have no idea what Apple's justification was for going to the authorities (and I hate to defend them), but I think they have a valid case regarding the privacy of their customers. Imagine if Apple installed the software instead of the artist. Without warning their customers before they approached the laptop, there would have been an uproar. That said, cool idea.
