But what's the advantage of hiding file extensions? Windows already asks if you're sure when you try to change a file's extension.
- dataflow 5y agoThe advantage is you don't show something that laymen probably wouldn't want to change 99% of the time. That way they don't do it by accident and mess up their files. Not every user even knows what a "file extension" is in the first place. Or whether/when it should be changed. See if your grandma can comprehend that error message.

- userbinator 5y agoYou show extensions to users not so they can change them, but so they can see that a file is actually a .jpg instead of a .exe with the icon of a .jpg.
