I did the math on this a while ago, and I think it came out to the US Army alone consuming 1% of the world’s oil production in just oil. This was just straight oil into vehicle gas tanks, and didn’t even include whatever fossil fuels might be used to produce all the electricity that they also use.
- wait_a_minute 5y agoPlease submit it to peer review along with your comparisons of Chinese and Russian spend and the consequences of either of those being the new world police if the USA just stopped doing its thing because of needing to consume 1% of the oil production.
- ashtonkem 5y agoI believe you’ve just made up an argument you thought I was making. This is quite annoying, please stop.
- wait_a_minute 5y agoI did not make up anything. I asked you kindly to provide your incredible findings on US military oil expenditures, and the relevant comparisons with other nations like Russia and China, ideally for peer review in a qualified journal or a public blog.
- jdmoreira 5y agoare you asking an HN commenter to publish a peer review paper on the basis of his back of the envelope calculations just because you got somehow offended with the possibility of his calculations being true? That’s really sad.
- chrisseaton 5y ago> I did not make up anything. I asked you kindly to provide your incredible findings This is called 'sealioning'. It’s a documented harassment technique. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning
- ashtonkem 5y agoSealioning and gas lighting. They’re demanding I debate them over a claim that they imagined me making.
- ahelwer 5y agoAh yes Russia, a state with an economy half the size of California, would dominate the world were it not for the US military incinerating a significant chunk of the world's fossil fuels. The USSR split up 30 years ago, time to update your villains!
- zdragnar 5y agoSetting aside that you ignored the "and China", I believe Crimea would like a word. Edit: it is worth noting that the joint chiefs chairman just testified to congress that Russia and China are the greatest physical threats to the US.
- ahelwer 5y agoThe military brass is never going to argue that the world is a safer place and they have no need of their obscene budget, come on. They happily manufacture whatever villains are necessary to get the goods.
- wait_a_minute 5y agoDo you believe that Chinese aggression in Hong Kong and Taiwan, or Russia’s towards Ukraine, are manufactured villains/risks?
- ahelwer 5y agoConvince me why I should want to contribute 10% of the money I earn every year to keep these countries I've never visited from being controlled by a different (in Ukraine, very slightly different) set of people. Also, as a bonus, for my money I get bombs dropped semi-randomly throughout the middle east. Two for one!

- thinkcontext 5y agoI believe the Air Force is the biggest energy consumer. They consume 10% of US aviation fuel, which is staggering to consider. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_usage_of_the_United_States_military https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_usage_of_the_United_Sta...
