Right to repair law passes New York Senate
- ddxxdd 5y agoJust like with any law, we need to ask ourselves how this can be abused in a way that falls outside the scope of the law's original intention. Will this place a burden on small businesses? For instance, will a small hobby shop that creates and sells a raspberry pi remote door opener be burdened with excessive documentation requirements?
- cowl 5y agoa rasberry pi remote door opener does not require excessive documentation. If this smal business has purposely overenginnered to render it non servicable by third parties than it's more than fair that they put at least as much effort on documentation as they put on overengineering.
- polartx 5y agoWell, the raspberry pi is already open source, so quoting or linking their documentation is already done. And if the small business was simply creating a “hat” of peripheral hardware that plugs into the pi, including a data sheet or BOM list is just a few mouse clicks in the cad software they’re using to design their PCB. This comment feels more like FUD than a realistic concern.
- redis_mlc 5y agoBig up to Louis Rossmann, a NY computer repairman on Youtube (1.58 million subscribers) who got the ball rolling for this law. He said, [they can ignore me at 1,000 subscribers, but not at 1.56 million.] And he was right.
