After being told once, "As an executive we expect 100% mindshare," I changed my entire philosophy out of rebellion and it has worked extremely well.
1. NO ONE owns your time, especially your "mindshare". This goes for everyone in the organization.
2. The organization should view time as something they are borrowing you from your real life, your family, your recreation, your mental stability.
3. The organization should invest in your time so there is no arguments from your real life when the organization needs extra effort.
4. Invest interest in your employees external projects as the vast majority of your technical breakthroughs will be informed by those projects.
5. Presence does not equate to productivity. It only equates to physical presence.
6. Invest time in understanding the problems your team finds interesting or challenging.
7. Encourage an environment of collaboration where each employee is excited to help their team members even if it costs them extra hours.
8. Give them back the hours from 7 when you can.
9. Realize your job is to make their job fulfilling and challenging.
10. Don't be an A-hat.
