For me the following works best: Superposition is like transparency blending of two images together. For 0.5 each you still can see both images, but of course information can be lost. And a superposition of 1% and 99% gives essentially only one picture even though it is a slightly mixed state. A measurement is then the amount of a single picture in the superposition. And quantum gates are just linear operators on the mixed (superposed) image.
