"Antonio participated in YC a decade ago, and I remember him as a decent person…I think if anything the YC community should be the ones defending Antonio, because many of us have first-hand knowledge of him, instead of just cherry picked quotes from a book."
-- Jessica Livingston
What makes this quote "cherry picked"? What context would make this sentence not misogynistic? Remember this isn't a quote someone overhead while he was drunk. He wrote and published this.
How does someone participating in your program and you remembering them as decent preclude them from being bad today? It's not that he's accused of being a serial killer. Just turns out he's misogynistic. Her response makes no sense to me.
Edit: Found an article where he explains the context (I'm not going to buy the book): https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/05/21/ex-apple-employee-antonio-garcia-martinez-speaks-out-on-firing https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/05/21/ex-apple-employee...
"Elaborating on the line on Thursday, the ad specialist and author said it was meant to cap off a joke made about his then-girlfriend.
The book was written in an over-the-top style invoking Hunter S. Thompson, Garcia Martinez explained, adding that the section in question was, in fact, a "paean" of praise about the unnamed woman."
Read the book if you want. Make up your own mind. Personally "I only insulted most women in this region because I was bitter at my girlfriend something-something-Hunter-S-Thompson." doesn't change my opinion.
