Still remember 3 years ago vscode launch keynote where the presenter was like "most open source software gets abandoned because open-source developers don't care about their projects. But this one is backed by Microsoft which makes it better and trustworthy..." something around this lines. The contempt for open-source was disgusting
Never used vscode again
- Melkman 5y agoAs I said before, VSCode is a nice example to see Microsofts stance on open source. The source is available under MIT license. Microsoft provides a pre-build binary of this code under the VSCode brand withe extra tracking included. If you strip the tracking out and build that code like VSCodium does you may no longer use the add-on repositories of the VSCode branded version and have to use open-vsx.org. And the standard extensions made by Microsoft like the C/C++ extension may not be published by open-vsx.org. So alternate versions can not deliver the functionalities like integration with platformIO. See also https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-cpptools/issues/6518 https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-cpptools/issues/6518 Microsoft wants people to write code for them for free. Not for other projects to build on that code.
