U.S. Senate passes sweeping bill to address China tech threat
- Flatcircle 5y agoDo the senators that voted against this bill have a reason for voting against it? One that lines up with their voting record to prove they’re being consistent. If not, I can’t see how it couldn’t be possible the senators that voted nay are somehow getting kickbacks from Chinese interests.
- decremental 5y agoThe actual text of the bill probably has a lot of unrelated things in it as most do. There could have been an objection on those grounds. As a general rule, whenever both parties agree on something you just know it's got to be bad. They usually only drop the pretense that they're two opposing sides of a political divide when the ruling class has an enormous amount to gain.
- indeedmug 5y agoYou could always look at specific issues with the bill's text rather than just spreading cynicism.
- decremental 5y agoThere is nothing more cynical than American politics and you should never give those politicians unearned benefit of the doubt.
- CogitoCogito 5y agoI find decremental's response significantly _less_ cynical than Flatcircle's post which he/she responded to. Flatcircle is basically asking "how could this have happened short of bribery?" while decremental is saying "there could be many reasons depending on the details of the bill". I think your characterization is a bit unfair.
- Flatcircle 5y agoI specifically ask a question at the start of my comment asking if there’s reasons to vote no. Then I mention does that no vote line up with how they consistently vote on other bills, for instance avoiding pork barrel bills. It appears that all the nay votes are southern republicans. Which I’m a bit surprised by as they are often China hawks. https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=117&session=1&vote=00226 https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_...
- xupybd 5y agoChina is the leading manufacturer of everything. Better relations with China means cheaper goods. China is the biggest military threat to the USA. There are reasons to avoid annoying China.
- sonambi 5y agoThe threat is Chinese leadership not their tech industry. High time Xi (and Putin for that matter) experience direct pain. All these indirect routes men like them dont give a shit about. They will keep searching for ways to destablize the west and democracies just for their own self preservation and nothing else. Tech is not the only tool they have. Inhumane Leadership has to be attacked inhumanely.
- throwaway4good 5y agoIs there a good overview out there on how the money (190B and 50B USD) will be spent?
- throwaway4good 5y agoThis is a much better article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/06/08/senate-china-science-technology/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/06/08/senate-c... Senate approves sprawling $250 billion bill to curtail China’s economic and military ambitions And it links to the actual bill: https://www.democrats.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/DAV21A48.pdf https://www.democrats.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/DAV21A48.pdf Which covers both banning shark fin soup and landing mr.
