Do You Still Know How to Want?
- premium-komodo 5y agoI vouched for this because I think it's unwise advice, and I'd like to be able to talk about why. Wanting stuff hurts. It's as if there's a deficit in you, and somewhere outside yourself, there's some key that, if you could obtain it, would bring you back to contentedness. This is a dangerous pattern because the keys only ever work for a little while. That strategy involves being on the hook to keep obtaining these external keys as needed. It's stressful. Secondly, and this might seem strange to some people, but seeing that something would be beneficial to accomplish can be completely separate from wanting it. When you want something, it hurts when you don't do it. You can put down the hurting and still accomplish whatever it is, if you believe it's a good goal. Long story short, advising people to want stuff goes against at least 26 centuries of advice from e.g. Buddhists. That's OK, but please make sure you have very good reasons for disagreeing if you oppose that many people.
