In my past life as a landlord, I bought a few townhome units in various Texas suburbs. I think it was profitable because it's hard to screw up buying any asset in the early 2010s.
The thing I didn't like about being a landlord was the mental overhead. Yes it was almost completely turnkey and passive, as I had a property manager, but there were these large rent checks coming in and almost as large mortgage payments going out. I wish I just bought equities and stuff, really.
Though I do think big long mortgages at low interest rates are great, especially if inflation is projected this decade.
If I were to buy a house again, it would probably be a rural thing rented out on Airbnb. And keep my debt to income ratio low.
- diveanon 5y agoIf handling rent payments made you wish for equities then airbnb may not be for you. I stopped doing airbnb because of the constant minor issues and damages caused by tenants. It is much easier to just rent.
