As someone with $20,000 in audio 2 channel hifi, I agree. But it's way more complicated. I pay $15USD per month for Qobuz, of which 70% is paid out to the record labels (NOT the artists). That's $10.50 a month. I listen to my system about 7 hours per week. 2/3rds of that is stuff I own. That leave about 10 hours a month of streaming, and I'm paying the labels $1/hour.
I would much prefer if things were broken down further.
For example, I pay Roon $10 USD/month. They simplify my music experience, integrate my personal collection with streaming collection, and interface perfectly with my hardware.
I would like in the future to pay artists directly, and interface with a "streaming" company for the procurement of said audio.
I would rather pay for the data I use to a third party company, and have more choice in how I distribute my money to artists.
Right now, Qobuz makes $4.50/month to stream me unlimited hi resolution music. That's great! But I would like something like a penny a play direct to the artist, and the rest to the streamer.
And, I would like to FORCE others to do the same ;)
Why should I subsidize someone that listens for 8 hours a day in the background?
Break it down. Pay $0.15-0.20 an hour direct to the artist and a $5 a month to the server.
Or maybe it's a penny a song, but at least 50% goes to the artist, and the rest to the label.
- elorant 5y agoWould you care to elaborate on how that $20k is spent on hardware? Seems like your setup is optimized for digital, and that makes me kind of curious as to what you've chosen.

- ipspam 5y agoSorry, that was cost breakdown. To answer your question, chord Qutest DAC. Vandersteen 3a signature time and phase aligned 4 way speakers, pass labs x2.5 Pre-amp, threshold s/150 amp. It's all class A, time and phase aligned. Then I dedicate the whole room and put speakers 1/3rd out from front wall, 1/5th out from side walls, and listening position at 2/3rds mark. It's all about flat response, and waves don't like to build very well using odd numbers. The bass traps are the real secret, not allowing the bass to slosh around and drown out the rest of the music. Bass goes 6 directions and you have too put way too much out. It then has to be "trapped" and controlled in order to hear the rest of the music again.
