Schild means shield btw. I had a friend with a schild name and for the longest time pronounced it "child" without them correcting me. I felt so embarrassed when I realized it means shield.
- Grustaf 5y agoThat's how the ending is usually pronounced in English though. Consider how Americans say "Rothschild".
- INTPenis 5y agoYes but I'm swedish and should know better! :D
- meowface 5y agoRothschild means "red shield", for anyone curious. The full etymology: >The name is derived from the German zum rothen Schild (with the old spelling "th"), meaning "at the red shield", in reference to the house where the family lived for many generations (in those days houses were designated not by numbers but by signs displaying different symbols or colours).
