Your email validation is probably rejecting email addresses with + in them. Gmail (and other providers) allow users to use virtual email addresses made up of their normal email with a +something appended to it. So I can give facebook the email myname+fbsucks@gmail.com. This makes it easier to steer the emails into folders and I'll also know where the email was leaked when a random company emails me using that address.
