- junon 5y agoSomeone has too much time on their hands. If you really buy into Doge (or any CC for that matter) you assume all risk. If you can't see the risk involved, perhaps you shouldn't be partaking. If it's not Elon Musk, it'll be the next guy. John McAfee was doing it long before musk and everyone made it a meme. Why is Elon's considered "destructive"? Why isn't Reddit's manipulation of AMC/GME considered "destructive"? This is dripping in a deeper hatred for Elon. I'm not a huge fanboy myself but come on... it's your fault if you lost your mortgage in Doge coin. Not Elon's.
- goldenkey 5y agoElon wields a powerful influence, a cult following. Fault is a fuzzy concept, not restricted to binary blame. Combine the poor taste of Elon fucking around with a monetary instrument, and his cult risking their life savings on his every word, and grave losses are the result. People commit suicide all the time because of large investment losses. Don't be too quick to doubt the monetary and biological loss in the US and abroad his statements likely caused. Your argument hinges on Elon not being the "hand that pulls the trigger." It's really irrelevant as everyone on HN is intelligent enough to understand that Elon is responsible for his reckless persuasions of a populace that is on average, stupid. Yes, the average person is... stupid. Especially ones who worship this man. Elon is not Tony Stark or Iron Man. He is not a hero. He is not a villain. He is a highly intelligent man with many blind spots and a penchant for rash, poorly judged decisions. - nickik 5y ago> Elon wields a powerful influence, a cult following. And a just as powerful influential anti-cult. You even used Thunderfood, the hero priest of Elon Haters as your source. Funny how a guy with no experience in public transport, rocketry, tunneling, AI is the universally source for all these technological facts that he knows better then everybody else. Who cares about NASA, former Astronauts, some of the best rocket scientists in modern history, space reporters who have reported on the space industry since 20+ years and various other people because when Thunderf00d makes a poorly edited anti-<anything evolving Musk> video its a universal truth that has to be upheld and spread threw-out the internet. > Yes, the average person is... stupid. Somebody that feels so superior and enlightened as you would certainty think so.
- goldenkey 5y agoThunderfoot is only two of the links and there are other similar, less sensationalized sources which show the same result, that Hyperloop and Boring Tunnel are both grifts. Regardless of whether you like Thunderfoot or not, his arguments about hyperloop are correct. Elon erased all signs of it from his web presence, and sold it off like a hot cake. The cities that paid for the boring tunnel express instead got a lame tiny tunnel Tesla death trap. Where is your substance of argument other than pedantry about Thunderfoot who sure, is sensationalist and dramatic, but says nothing wrong about Hyperloop nor the Boring Tunnel..
- tinus_hn 5y agoHow can you talk about risks when you can’t talk about destruction? That is the risk. If you are invested in cryptocurrency, that cryptocurrency losing value, that value being destructed, that is your risk. It doesn’t mean it is irresponsible to take on that risk or that you are gambling your house.
- celticninja 5y agoMcAfee has been prosecuted for his manipulation. Musk has been censured for his by the SEC, the unregulated nature of CC means he doesn't get in trouble for it, but that doesn't mean he isn't manipulating the market. FWIW I agree, know the risks and invest, or not, accordingly. But that doesn't give Elon an out, he is aware of his effect and must therefore shoulder some responsibility for his actions and their effects.
- Tepix 5y agoThe biggest crash came after Tesla stopped accepting bitcoin, acknowledging its contribution to the climate catastrophe.
- ctvo 5y agoIncredible that a genius like Elon didn’t know this beforehand. More incredible that the BTC profits Tesla made turned their quarter profitable just in time for reporting.
