iPadOS approaches the edge of desktop computing
- null_object 5y agoI’m constantly hoping this is going to be true, that some new release of iPadOS is the breakthrough to serious computing that the hardware at least seems to be capable of, but each time I try to do ‘serious’ work on the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard I bought last year, I realize how bound I am to the paradigms of desktop computers. Trying to work with several programs at the same time, navigating the ‘finder’ interface with gestures that still cause ‘accidental’ things to happen, having to switch from keyboard to screen input for certain interactions. There are certain applications that really work with the strengths of the iPad - Concepts from Too Corporation, or Procreate for drawing, for instance - but on the whole I feel I’m constantly hankering after the sheer instinctive simplicity that I find when using the Mac. I do think that if my output was mostly text-based, or even some type of social media output, like onscreen image, video or blogging output, then the iPad might be enough? edit: one thing I should add, is that I definitely hope any improvements won’t be limited to the new M1 iPad Pros. I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that last year’s very expensive iPad Pro already sits on an enormous reserve of unused processing power, and leaving these previous models behind would be a great disappointment.
