Waking just one hour earlier cuts depression risk by double digits
- WalterGR 5y agoIt seems like this study shows - rather - that people who wake up an hour earlier have less depression risk by double digits.
- etaioinshrdlu 5y agoThis keeps getting posted here, but I feel completely miserable if I have to wake up an hour earlier than normal. It happens much more often than I like and it’s awful.
- rmah 5y agoI'm curious, how do you deal with daylight savings time switches?
- eecc 5y agoI’m not the OP but I’ll tell you how I “deal”: awfully. Takes days if not weeks to get rid of an uncomfortable feeling of anxiety, some undesirable FOMO.
- etaioinshrdlu 5y agoI set my life up as much as possible to wake up whenever I want. So I usually don't notice too much.
- WalterSear 5y agoIt's also bullshit. It's a correlative study being misrepresented to get more clicks.

- char8 5y agoHow does this sciencealert type garbage even reach the HN frontpage?
- mjevans 5y agoThis story is an example of one of the rare few I'd like to open the Mollyguard cage and click the Downvote (on the submission) for.
- yowlingcat 5y agoLaw of large numbers. Do what I did and flag it and move on. More substantively, I agree with other commenters who have said all this shows is that there are people who have lower depression who wake up one hour earlier. Definitely does seem like clickbait.
- panarky 5y ago> Do what I did and flag it and move on. And yet here you are.
- yowlingcat 5y agoIronically, the thread is now flagged, which proves my point. I get that it's fun to be snide on the internet, but is that worth it if you end up in the wrong anyways?
- emmap21 5y agoIf you don't like it, just need not to read -- what was wrong?
- Bancakes 5y agoI genuinely wonder who benefits from people adapting to wake up (and potentially go to work) earlier.
- spicybright 5y agoOne hour earlier from what, your normal wake up time? When that becomes your normal wake up time do you get depressed again, lol
- alienalp 5y agoI am in depression since like i was born and at the short period of times when i am out of depression for complicated reasons, i was getting up early nonintentionally.
- lvl100 5y agoHaving just three extra decimals to your bank account cuts depression risk by triple digits.

- gchamonlive 5y agoMaybe early rising is an effect of being emotionally healthy, not a cause. Someone that naturally rises early might be in good emotional shape, but someone that is not healthy will not magically become healthier by just forcing him or herself to rise earlier. I think we are mixing cause and effect here. It might also not be correlated. I mean, it may well be cultural, to rise earlier when you are feeling fine, but those two facts, early rising and emotional health, might not have a cause and effect relationship at all.
- poundofshrimp 5y agoWhen I’m able to shift my schedule a couple of hours earlier, I feel happier. Not sure why - maybe because this way I have some free time before kicking off my day and never feel I’m late at the start of the day.
- jFriedensreich 5y agothe worst part is that a study like is claimed here would be maybe even possible but is in no way behind that click bait title. to actually prove this a large randomised test group (thousands not hundreds) with no current diagnosable form of depression would have to be followed over a time long enough so a significant part of them are expected to develop depression in the course of the study. 50/50 random individuals are forced to get up earlier or later, just changing sleep pattern of the early risers would destroy comparability. The hard part is properly controlling for compliance, drop outs, spouses and jobs etc. a subject with onset of depression is more likely to drop out when forced to get up uncomfortably early and a subject with a fulfilling demanding job is less likely to be able to continue sleeping long for a long term study etc. The relationship of sleep and depression has been known for decades but to properly study the real causality here is harder than most think.
- mam3 5y agoOn hour earlier than what ? At some point its an infinite loop
