I’ve definitely parked cars on a lawn, played games on a lawn, rolled around on a lawn, setup tables and awnings for gatherings, and had animals all over them.

A lawn keeps the dust down, provides a nice canvas for a variety of activities and is a great place to throw a slip n slide. Sure, you can construct ways to do all of those things without a lawn, but a lawn works too.
