As usual, the solution proposed by those indicting any effort to squash misinformation is allowing anyone, regardless of expertise, to have their opinion receive equal weight on the world stage. We’ve seen just the beginning of where that gets us. There will never be a world where all published claims will be true and all false claims correctly identified, but the solution is not to open the algorithmic gates wide to those who most want to debase the idea of truth in service of factual relativism. Freedom of speech =/ freedom of reach. Expertise, and a history of truth, has to matter to how content is algorithmically distributed.
