Looks like it has now been updated and returns images of various tanks and male athletes, but still no images of what seems most relevant to the phrase - the iconic Tiananmen Square photograph that goes by that name.
- mfkp 5y agoI noticed the same thing: It looks like microsoft caught on and is now returning generic results of "tank" or "man": https://imgur.com/sGEQRXe https://imgur.com/sGEQRXe https://imgur.com/DjtXltn https://imgur.com/DjtXltn
- karamanolev 5y agoStill returns the same (no results) for images, at least for me.
- dalbasal 5y agoThis is where it gets distressing. I'm now seeing tank man, it's image number 27... recently posted news article. When a page returns "no results," something is obviously being banned or censored... at least we know. If the action is less explicit, we can't really know for sure what's happening. How do you distinguish tank man losing prominence from the millions of people complaining that their posts, sites or whatnot aren't receiving a fair amount of exposure?
- bombcar 5y agoTwenty minutes ago I got random tanks. Now I get the expected results.
- mr_toad 5y agoI get tanks, and men in tank tops. Google image search results are all photos of tank man.
- canada_dry 5y agoWow. Yup, the results are being tweaked as we speak, which in-and-of-itself its pretty interesting actually i.e. that the BING keepers manipulate specific results on-the-fly. I'm not sure that's reassuring/comforting!
- phreeza 5y agoWhat do you mean my manipulate? That implies there is some kind of "natural" order that is being deviated from, which there isn't. It's all defined by the "bing keepers".
- canada_dry 5y agoManipulate as in: the general ranking algorithms were explicitly overridden for a very specific search phase. I guess it shouldn't really surprise anyone that they have this capability for edge cases, but it begs the question what other results are being manipulated for political or corporate self interest.
- phreeza 5y agoI think one should also not have any illusion that the general ranking algorithm is somehow special and untarnished. It is also optimized for Bing revenue, not any kind of higher ideal.
- cc9one 5y agoHow can you come to the conclusion that Bing is solely optimized for revenue?
- emteycz 5y agoIt's owned by a for-profit corporation.
