Nigeria suspends Twitter indefinitely after deleted tweet from its president
- naruvimama 5y agoCongratulations Nigeria. Not bending the knee to twatternazi
- tinus_hn 5y agoHet Nigeria! I deleted an email from your prince once. Please ban all email!
- loudtieblahblah 5y agoThis story is full of people to hate and tons of laughs at the same time. Seems, at a cursory glance, that Nigeria is being ran by some nutbag authoritarians, which seems par the course around the globe over the past decade. But it's sort of nice to see Twitter get a taste of their own medicine all the same, regardless of source.
- ejanus 5y agoThey would suspend him from their platform. But he can't filter out VPN.
- xibalba 5y agoBut VPN usage can be detected and punished. China and Iran already do this. Bottom line is, if you've got the power and the will, you can definitely control the "how" and "what" of internet access in your jurisdiction.
- ejanus 5y agoBut China and Iran are not democratic nations. And he has less than 2 years. If Iran has the power and will, and hoe come they have routinely fail to stop those sabotaging their infrastructure. I think China is the only one with that unique capability right now.
- eunos 5y ago90% people don't know how to use VPN or too lazy to use it.
- filleduchaos 5y ago"On the one hand there's an authoritarian, pseudo-genocidal government but on the other hand I'm mad at this website for not allowing everybody post absolutely everything" Westerners centering themselves and their pet peeves in foreign conflicts will never not be utterly exhausting.
- loudtieblahblah 5y agothe concept of a web centralized into 5-7 multinationals who get to decide what is and what is not allowed to be said, while society has shifted near all thought and communication into non-ephemeral centralized corporate platforms, is inherently capitalist, grossly authoritarian (and not even authoritarian with a pretense of democratic under-pinning), dystopian and it's completely antithetical to the entire intent of the web's early designs. whine more about westerners as you excuse your sycophancy to corporate power.
- filleduchaos 5y agoMy idea of "gross authoritarianism" is a government headed by a literal former military dictator who prior to his own military dictatorship had participated in state-sanctioned genocide. It's a government whose security forces terrorise and rob citizens on the daily, because the spirit of the military junta it was under for decades never actually went anywhere (and also because when protests against their actions get answered by the army opening fire on civilians). It's a government that straight up doesn't pay its civil servants their salaries and pensions because accountability does not exist, and that consistently implements policies designed to frustrate and starve its population. It's this and too many other things to name and very much also a government that bans a social media platform because said platform removed a tweet where it dog-whistle threatened genocide against the peoples it had already committed genocide against a half-century ago. But I can understand how people who've been coddled all their lives could form an idea of "gross authoritarianism" as "the web has big social media platforms".
