NASA's Juno to get a close look at Jupiter's moon Ganymede
- prideout 5y agoJuno's Microwave Radiometer "will provide the first in-depth investigation of how the composition and structure of the ice varies with depth, leading to a better understanding of how the ice shell forms and the ongoing processes that resurface the ice over time." The flyby is Monday, but when will we get to see photos?
- riffraff 5y agoI can't help but chuckle at the mythical reference. Ganymede was a beautiful mortal whom Zeus (Jupiter) abducted (the other Galilean moons are also Zeus loves). Now Juno, Zeus' wife, is getting there "to get a close look at" him :)
- huhtenberg 5y agoThat's 100% intentional. Juno's name comes from Greek and Roman mythology. The god Jupiter drew a veil of clouds around himself to hide his mischief, and his wife, the goddess Juno, was able to peer through the clouds and reveal Jupiter's true nature. https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/juno/news/juno20110805.html https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/juno/news/juno20110805.ht...

- mixmastamyk 5y agoAlways had a soft spot for Ganymede, after playing the video game "Target Earth" back before the turn of the century cough. It's also one of the rare places in the solar system humans could conceivably build a colony, after the Moon and Mars. The Expanse series tackles that idea.
