> FTA "There is no evidence — not a smidgen — for the claim that COVID-19 originated in a laboratory in China or anywhere else, or that the China lab ever had the virus in its inventory. There's even less for the wildest version of the claim, which is that the virus was deliberately engineered."
There is evidence that the Wuhan lab had the bat and pangolin viruses in house, and there is evidence that the lab does and publishes gain of function research, and there is no need for evidence of a lab leak, everybody agrees they occur.
On the other hand, what there is no evidence for is natural mutation/evolution of the virus, or of a zoonotic species jump. Previous examples of zoonotic sources have always turned up evidence in animal populations within a short time, but in this case after a year and a half there is no evidence of an animal source for Covid-19.

In the case of the 2002 SARS outbreak, the most likely source wasn't identified until 2017: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-017-07766-9 https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-017-07766-9
