I'm the same way on iPhone—I use several 3rd-party apps, but it'd be 90% as useful to me without any of them. iPad? Oh hell no. I'd not bother with one, at all, without third-party apps. With them it's amazing, probably my single favorite computer platform for anything that's not programming. Without them it's just a huge, worse (there's not even a calculator!) iPhone.
