This is off topic. And getting away from root article. However Before Israel there was the British mandate. Before that Ottoman Empire. The Palestinians in Gaza never controlled the land.

> The Palestinians in Gaza never controlled the land. Doesn't that just mean “they were never powerful”? If they were living there, does it matter who was in power? English rule never stopped the Welsh being Welsh, or Wales from “belonging to” them. (I don't know how applicable this analogy is to this situation – probably not very, given there isn't a territorial dispute over who should have Wales.)
