Show HN: Why Cryptocurrencies?, a book about the utility of cryptocurrencies
- quickthrower2 5y agoNice book. However I disagree that cryptocurrency is untraceable. In fact there is a public ledger! And law enforcement can connect dots if they subpoena exchanges or even take down exchanges entirely. Or they can do the normal cop thing and get someone you are dealing with to cooperate and link their address to yours. Monero claims to be private and truly anonymous but I don’t know the technical details, many say it is.
- lawn 5y agoThank you! I agree about the public ledger, and I tried to point it out in many places throughout the book. As for Monero, it's not perfect (nothing is), but it does things very well. By default it hides sender address, receiver address, transaction amount and it even obfuscates the IP address of where the transaction originates from. I touched on the subject briefly in this chapter: https://whycryptocurrencies.com/challenges.html#privacy-and-fungibility https://whycryptocurrencies.com/challenges.html#privacy-and-...
