I think there are two lessons to take away from this. First, the mall can be a great place to do user testing, if you want to reach a broad audience. Except that I would imagine that you get more male participants, because they are waiting for their female partners more then the other way around. Second, you need to test with your actual target audience. For Mozilla that is at least people who know how to use a computer to some degree.
