I love shellfish and am not at all squeamish about the heads or veins on shrimp or biting into the crunchy body of a soft shell crab, but even though I can see the similarities, thinking about eating a cicada gives me the heebie-jeebies.
I wish I understood disgust better then I do.
- 1_player 5y agoI think disgust is familiarity. If eating shellfish were something only some remote primitive tribe would do, you'd be pretty disgusted at the idea of eating sea insects. I learned relatively late that in some Western cultures (USA perhaps?) eating horse or rabbit is a bit frowned upon. They're pretty common and pretty tasty in Italy. But dogs, I'd never eat. Though that's more of a choice than disgust, I'd rather eat dog than a tarantula.
