I always found it odd that SSDs die out within 5-10 years if they're not accessed frequently (i.e they're not suitable for long term archival storage) yet oldskool computers' storage of the 80's seem to last forever. It almost makes me want to buy some of this old tech since the storage longevity is markedly better.
- vikingerik 5y agoWell, survivorship bias. Nobody is talking about their 80's computers that died by the 90's. And nobody can yet talk about tech from the 2010s that has lasted 40 years. That said, yes older storage methods may have better longevity. Compare an SSD to game console ROM cartridges that last virtually forever. What fails in both older and modern storage hardware isn't really the per-bit magnetic storage, it's the environment necessary to access them, the power supply and spinning motor and moving head in a hard drive.
