This article says that there is this huge value in the IR code database, but what's to stop a new entrant from just buying a harmony remote and paying someone to go through all of the possible devices and recording the IR codes? IANAL, but I don't think that this would be covered by copyright.
- stingraycharles 5y agoSounds like it would be the equivalent of scraping a database, which would, in fact, be subject to copyright law. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database_right https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database_right
- szundi 5y agoBigger part of the world does not really care, sadly.
- yc12340 5y agoYour comment grossly misrepresents intent and application of copyright law. Creating a collecting of facts does not constitute breach of law under any existing legislation I know.
- NavinF 5y agoThankfully databases don't have copyright protection in the US
- makomk 5y agoPretty sure they aggressively limit how many IR codes can be downloaded by one customer.
