Possible to Learn Japanese as an Adult?
- slater 5y agoyou ever gonna stop spamming us with that site or nah? https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=japanesecomplete.com https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=japanesecomplete.com
- sova 5y agoPardon if I have been overzealous in sharing. It is worth noting that there is no obligation to upvote anything on HN. I personally find the SVO and SOV distinction very valuable in assessing which languages are perceived to be easy and difficult to learn. It's okay to repost interesting things if they don't get a lot of traction. This submission is a unique submission.
- gregjor 5y agoIt’s not possible. For anyone, ever. Now stop posting this.
- sova 5y agoIt is certainly possible and I myself am living proof.
- swiley 5y agoAre you middle aged? I certainly noticed a distinct decrease in neuroplasticity around 24. There are things that are absolutely not possible to learn as an adult (such as perfect pitch.) I'm not saying Japanese is one of them though. (I doubt it is actually, as someone that learned a decent amount in their teens.)
- gregjor 5y agoInteresting. Do you mean 24 is now the beginning of middle age? I can’t detect changes in synaptic activity or neuroplasticity, but I can detect distinct decreases in mitochondrial efficiency in my cells. Actually adults apparently can learn perfect pitch, it’s not “absolutely not possible.” https://news.uchicago.edu/story/acquiring-perfect-pitch-may-be-possible-some-adults https://news.uchicago.edu/story/acquiring-perfect-pitch-may-... As for adults learning Japanese, I intended my comment to make the OP stop spamming this link to a commercial site, not seriously. Apparently ability to detect humor and sarcasm increases with age.
