In the beginning years of the web, a lot of energy was wasted by a substantial amount of the best and brightest: They argued against any commercialisation of the web at all, fighting a battle that could not have been won. Instead these people should have developed models for the RIGHT way of commercialisation, precisely because they had the right sensibilities.
Now some of them (re the OP) seem to come around. A bit late, but I think not too late.
