I've seen reporters ask really invasive questions, or repeat them over and over, with slightly different words.
I've seen Steve Kerr or Greg Popovich handle these types of situations with grace, but they are far older than Osaka. They have had years to hone their responses and they are very accomplished in their fields. For Osaka, I can totally empathize with her. It's demeaning, sometimes, and when they see you are vulnerable they push even harder.
- tokai 5y agoI would have thought that any high level athlete would take some kind of media training.
- e40 5y agoSome of these athletes are very young. Training is one thing, but doing it IRL is another, especially after a hard loss when you are physically drained.
- bloaf 5y agoI wonder if Osaka showed up and only said "I didn't understand, please repeat the question" until the interview was over if she would end up banned.
- kaladin_1 5y agoYeah, some reporters can be nasty and I wonder if there's a way for the players to complain. I have seen Liverpool's coach, Jurgen Klopp, lose his temper over a reporter after a game. But, you know what, the whole thing makes fans even want to watch it for the drama
- rsj_hn 5y agoYes, it’s a war where inane questions lead to inane answers which the reporters know are boring so there is a reward for creating drama and controversy as the athletes try to keep things boring
